MUZAFFARGARH: The Bait Mir Hazar police have registered a case against five people who allegedly made a woman gulp down acid over a dispute.
The police, however, failed to arrest the suspects and the station house officer claimed the woman might have taken acid to commit suicide. Reports suggested Shabana Bibi, a resident of Belywala area of Jatoi tehsil, returned home from some place late on Wednesday night and her in-laws tortured her and made her drink acid. As her condition worsened, she was taken to the DHQ hospital, where doctors referred her to Multan’s Nishtar Hospital.
Shabana’s father Abdul Rasheed complained to police that his daughter went to condole her niece’s death and came back home after a day. He said her father-in-law and brother-in-law went beside themselves in anger and not only abused her but also made her drink acid.
Rasheed said Shabana married Arif a few months ago and she had strained relations with her in-laws. Police registered a case under sections 324, 336B of PPC against Shabana’s husband Arif, Zaffar, Ghulam Yaseen, Akhtar and Tariq.
SHO Matiullah Khan told this correspondent on Friday that the suspects had taken pre-arrest bail till Aug 22. He claimed that although a case had been registered, initial investigation suggested the woman might have taken acid on her own to commit suicide.
